Microsoft and Atom Computing have announced a major breakthrough in quantum computing

At the Microsoft Ignite conference. They successfully entangled 24 logical qubits using neutral atoms held in place by lasers—a new record. Even more impressive, the system can now detect and correct instances where atoms “disappear,” a common challenge in such setups.

The companies have already run the Bernstein-Vazirani quantum algorithm on this system using 20 logical qubits formed from 80 physical ones. By next year, they plan to offer systems with over 1,000 physical qubits to commercial clients.

While “commercial clients” likely refers to research labs, the fact that these systems are moving toward commercialization is a clear sign of progress.
